Since 1988 A&C Maps cc has been publishing special interest maps, focusing mostly on Cape Town and its surrounds. For the past 10 year, Infestation has worked with A&C maps to keep tourists and locals on the right track.
The maps include The Arts + Crafts Map, which shows you where to find great art and directs you to the City’s cultural treasures, The Food Map which ensures you locate good food and wine and the wildly popular Pink Map – the gay guide to the city and surrounds. The most widely distributed map, The Cape Town Green Map, grew out of Green Goal 2010, the environmental programme of the 2010 World Cup to change a city’s habits.
The challenge when working on projects like these is to collate and design large amounts of information onto a map that will fit into your back pocket.
To ensure these maps are user-friendly and functional it is important to have consistency and a good balance between images and text. A strong discipline in the use of grids and type is needed and predictable design elements such as bullet points and sub heads increase legibility and navigation. A functional eye-grabbing cover that represents the content is essential to being noticed amidst the many other tourism maps on the shelves.
These maps are available all around Cape Town at various tourist hotspots, including the airport, at all tourist information centres, the MyCity station and many more. More than 60 000 maps are printed yearly and the demand exceeds the print run.
