‘Molo’ is a Xhosa greeting or salutation known to all who live and work in South Africa. It is now also the name of a new free community newspaper, published by the Cape Town Partnership, which focuses on the people of Cape Town.
Molo was born out of a mandate to showcase the diverse people and stories in our city and knit together the human fabric of a sometimes divided city. Filled with human interest stories, unusual maps and place profiles in and around Cape Town, the distinct, modular design is clean and sophisticated, with clear navigational systems and a neutral color palette that allows the images to lead the narrative.
Alongside the sophisticated font choice, we juxtaposed a somewhat rustic, almost hand drawn masthead, and simplified this even further to create an easily recognizable icon to be used on social media platforms.
Judging by the warm response it has received after only two issues, we have a feeling this quirky newcomer is going to soon become an institution.
