World Design Capital 2014
From 2010 to 2012, Infestation had the pleasure of working with the Cape Town Partnership on the bid to elect Cape Town as the world’s design capital for the year 2014.
Cape Town’s bid focused on rebuilding and reconnecting worlds separated by social engineering through apartheid and reshaping the cityscape into a safer, more efficient and inclusive home for all our residents.
Infestation’s role in this was to strategise a campaign and design a brand language that would roll out across the campaign in order to initiate and elicit excitement, hype and buy-in from the people of Cape Town and mobilise its creatives. ‘Live design, transform life’ has become the recognised slogan throughout the creative fraternity in this regard.
Our design of the 465 page Bid Book which went to Helsinki was instrumental in winning Cape Town the bid. It was also entered into the 2010 Loeries, where it won a Bronze in its category. When the ICSID committee visited in 2011 to assess our bid, the campaign grew visually in leaps and bounds and social media campaigns, such as “Find your yellow” were launched to raise awareness and hype.
These social media campaigns were coupled with events orchestrated to invite public engagement. The frenzy was unstoppable when we won and the enthusiasm infectious. Since then, public education has been ongoing and a call for entries opened in early 2013.
What began as a little-known project spearheaded by a group of visionaries, has become a full-blown movement giving Cape Town a voice, a stand, as well as long and short term goals that will improve the lives of many in the years to come. And all this, through clever design!
